The Decorator is one of the most amazing machines in the can plant. Decorators such as the Belvac 8RS6-2000 (as shown in the video’s live footage) will run at speeds up to 2,000 cans/minute, and it all starts at the infeed track, where cans are loaded, single-file onto individual mandrels. Multiple ink stations live on the decorator. The job of each ink station is to transfer single color graphics onto the printer blanket (via the ink station’s printer plate). Once the printer blanket is fully loaded (with each ink station’s single color graphics), the printer blanket transfers the decoration onto the bright can. Over-varnish is applied over the graphics to protect the decoration. The decorated can leaves the Decorator on a pin-chain, which is inserted into the can (to not disrupt the un-cured decoration on the outside). The pin-chain caries the can through a Bottom Coater, which applies a varnish to the bottom edge of the can to enhance mobility of the can through the rest of the can making process. Finally, the pin-chain carries the can through the pin-oven, which cures the decoration.
