My first trip to Sardinia started with an overnight ferry from Napoli which ended with me sleeping on the floor. I know it sounds bad but it really wasn't? (You gotta watch the video for context!) Anyway, thankfully, we were some of the first to board the ferry so we secured a comfy corner before the "Hunger Games" for the perfect sleeping/lounging spot started on board. A beach towel, packing cube, and a lungi we picked up in Jaffna became our bedding for the night. Woke up to the most stunning sunrise, smiles, and high energy from everybody on board. Do it if you're looking for an adventure! Cagliari, our first point of contact, didn't quite feel as welcoming as our previous destinations. Mass tourism seemed to have taken a stronghold and we struggled to find any connections so after a few days, we headed to the north of Sardinia curious to see how that'll be like. We took a train and then a rail replacement bus service and as soon as we arrived in Sassari, things felt different, they felt familiar. It felt like the Italy we'd experienced in the south. We dropped our bags and immediately headed to the local municipal market; something we love doing wherever we go. Markets and grocery stores are a must! We were instantly welcomed with open arms; went in thinking it'll be closed, left 2 hours later having made a few new friends who made us feel so at home. So, we missed our big ferry to our next destination which we had booked for the next day and ended up staying in Sassari for 6 days. When you know, you know... you know? Nicola, one of our new friends, took us to Corsa all'Anello that very same market day, one of the oldest and fascinating Sardinian festivals where horsemen and horsewomen compete in tests that require a tonne of skill and courage. Man, what a night! One of the biggest highlights of our stay was attending The March of Candelieri, a centuries old sacred Sassari festival that's rooted in tradition, faith, and the bestest vibes. This happens every year on the 14th of August so I highly recommend that you plan a trip around it. It truly was an experience like no other. The people of Sassari are warm, proud, and so kind. Watching them come together was such a joy to witness. I'm so grateful and happy that I get to share with you guys this experience which was so special, a festival that was all about family, friends, togetherness; something that's often missing in this modern world we live in now. You know how we love talking about the best islands in the world but what makes them the best? Crystal clear turquoise waters? Food that nourishes your soul? People that make you feel at home? If those are the things that make them the best, Sardinia will top the list in my opinion. Sardinia, Italy... you have my whole heart. #sardinia #italian #italy #italianfood #sassari
