Autism & The Interoception Sensory System Part 1 In this video I discuss this relatively unknown sensory system. Before my son was born and autism was in our lives, I knew little about the details of such things as Interoception systems. researching this stuff really helped support my son, it made clear to me why he reacted in certain ways to sensations in and out of his body. This led me to learn more about the other unknown senses of Vestibular and proprioception which I will be discussing in the coming months. I aim to discuss this topic in a 3 part series due to it's intricacy. I want to keep the videos to a maximum of 30 minutes otherwise it can get a little overwhelming. This sensory system helps us know when we are hot and cold, hungry or full, where pain is and how to move away from painful situations as a defense mechanism. When we cannot receive those receptors of information there are dangers of both health and physical outcomes. Emotionally this condition can be difficult if you are unable to feel when the need to urinate is happening until it is either almost too late and the rush to find a toilet is overwhelming or it is too late and accidents happen causing embarrassment. Overeating can occur which can create health conditions such as diabetes or obesity and many others. Under eating can create fainting, becoming lethargic and sleepy to low blood pressure and depression. There is still much to learn about this, currently Occupational Health Therapists are the go to support. They can assist with helping you to become in tune with our bodies through breathing exercises and physical activities. Creating timetables and schedules of when to eat and what to eat (for example) can also help a person to manage their food and drink intake to ease any health issues. There can be other medical reasons why a person does not eat or drink, or feel when they need to use the toilet, it is always best to get medical checks to eliminate any hidden health issues. Once this has been established, you can then look at interoception as a reason for such mentioned challenges. Here are some links to some websites explaining the interoception system: https://link.springer.com/article/10.... https://www.aapcautismbooks.com/produ... As with all of what I discuss on this Channel I suggest that seeking out autism run groups on social media and speaking with autistic people and those with actual personal experiences of each topic is a crucial way of learning about all you need to know. It can save much time wasting and worrying. #autismwisdom #nonverbalcommunication #whatisautism #sensitivityautism #learningthelanguageofautism #dazliousautism #BelleBerroyer #autisticperspectives #sensoryprocessingandautism #mouthsensitive #eatingdifficulties
