A handful of protesters held signs on the corner of Bancroft and Macadam Wednesday afternoon, occupying a small stretch of sidewalk on the outskirts of a one-block caution tape perimeter surrounding the ICE facility. On the other side of the perimeter, off Bond and Macadam, a smaller group of protesters spent some time organizing a pile of their belongings, which Portland Police had allowed them to recuperate before removing the remainder of the protest camp, which has been in place since June. A timeline of Trump's deployment of troops to Oregon The perimeter was set up Tuesday at 11 a.m. ahead of the arrival of Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Secretary Kristi Noem. It remained in place until 4:30 p.m. on Wednesday, despite Noem's Tuesday afternoon departure and despite the small number of protesters and reduced activity in the area. At many points throughout the day, PPB officers outnumbered the protesters. On Tuesday, the city had told KATU that the perimeter was standard procedure for the arrival of a dignitary. When asked why the perimeter remained up long after Noem's departure on Wednesday, a spokesperson for PPB said only that it would be removed soon but would not say when nor why it remained up.
