MAP FORUM - 21 September 2021 Verrochio's Art of Dressing: Sculpture Traditions Updated "Verrocchio’s bronze David in the Bargello is arguably the most beautiful, creative, and expressive example of the Italian use of Islamic-style garments to signify a location in the Holy Land, a biblical or early Christian time, and the honored status of the wearer. I will discuss the roots of this longstanding artistic convention in medieval cult images and practices, and the new freighted specificity Verrocchio gave to it. I will also suggest that Verrocchio drew upon the same traditions for the remarkable artistry and effectiveness of the lost wax ex-votos of Lorenzo de’ Medici, and his painted wooden Crucifix in the Bargello." Rosamond E. Mack is an independent scholar residing in Washington, D.C. After receiving a Ph.D. in Italian Renaissance Art from Harvard University, she lived fifteen years in the Arab world with her husband, a diplomat. These disparate experiences led to her study of Italian contacts with Islamic culture, her book Bazaar to Piazza: Islamic Trade and Italian Art, 1300 – 1600 (University of California Press, 2002), and numerous follow-up publications and presentations.
