MAP FORUM - 15 March 2022 Renaissance Men's Fashion: Ten Decisive Details Renaissance masculine dress was a political phenomenon that fashioned power and patriarchal authority. In fifteenth-century Italian courts, men put themselves on display like peacocks, attracting attention with scintillating brocades, shining armor, sparkling jewels, and glistening swords, spurs, and sequins. This talk reveals the complex and entangled relations between bodies and clothing, and explores the negotiations among makers, wearers, and materials. Timothy McCall is Associate Professor of Art History at Villanova University. His research centers on Italian Renaissance art and on visual intersections of power and gender (particularly masculinity), in addition to histories of fashion and material culture. McCall co-edited Visual Cultures of Secrecy in Early Modern Europe (2013). Currently he is co-editing a forthcoming, six-volume Bloomsbury Cultural History of Luxury. His book Brilliant Bodies: Fashioning Courtly Men in Early Renaissance Italy was just published in January 2022 with Penn State University Press, and a manuscript in progress investigates the materials of Renaissance fashion within a global context.
