“Now the greatest part about outcome-based grazing is the flexibility to just change year to year. So if we didn’t get the moisture, now we can adapt and do something different that’s suitable to the ground. Our objective is to provide good cover for the sage-grouse habitat, and how we do that with the flexibilities of outcome-based is that we can graze the dormant season grasses, and we can have a full year growth season, to obtain the cover that we need for the sage-grouse.” - Angelo Raftopoulos, Rancher, Craig, CO The Raftopoulos family, who run Little Snake Land & Livestock, knows from research and life-long experience that their grazing operation provides excellent habitat for wildlife including the greater sage-grouse. In collaboration with their local Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Field Office, an Outcome-Based Grazing Authorization (OBGA) has been crafted that allows the ranching operation to choose when and where they graze flexibly. As resources change year to year, the flexibility to change their management plan allows livestock grazing to take place when vegetation is ready. This allows for sustained or improved ecological health, and continues benefits for multiple uses (including wildlife habitat) on the landscape as well as for their ranching operations. ____________________ The Outcome-Based Grazing program enables ranchers to collaborate more closely with the BLM on the design of their public land grazing authorizations. With this program, grazing authorizations are designed with built-in flexibilities tied to the terms and conditions of their grazing authorization. These flexibilities allow ranchers to adapt to changing conditions. The ability to adjust management on an as-needed time frame can benefit both the land health that wildlife relies on, and the sustainability of grazing operations.
