Our F-350's ZF5 clutch went out the other day. Instead of paying someone else to replace it we decided to save some money and do it ourselves. This is a 1993 F-350 with a 7.3 idi(non turbo) ZF5 transmission, 1356 transfer case, 11" clutch with a Dual Mass Flywheel. First things first, I went through the diagnosis stage to determine what our issue was. I inspected the pedal and it was in working order. Next I looked at the hydraulics and found that the original slave cylinder was still there. These are made of plastic and tend to leak over time and ours was leaking. Replaced the slave cylinder, wow that is a difficult task, and "bled" the system best we could. Well that did not solve the issue other than the leaky slave cylinder. It could only be the "clutch" right? GUESS WHAT THAT MEANS...Gotta pull the transmission. I started out thinking it would be easier to separate the transfer case from the transmission before we dropped the transmission but I was wrong. It ended up being easier to drop it all as a whole, less to deal with in a sense. My brother and I got the transmission down and out of the way in a couple hours. I will say, it helps to have the proper equipment to get a job like this done. We were able to borrow a very nice transmission jack to get this job done. Luckily these trucks sit tall enough there was no need to lift it to pull the transmission. We pulled the pressure plate off and inspected the clutch disc and found it to be in our opinion to be in good working order. There was a couple blue/purplish spots on the pressure plate which are signs it got a little "hot" but the surface was still good. When it came to the THROW OUT BEARING that was another story. There was WAY too much slop in this bearing for it to be considered "good" still. THERE LIES OUR PROBLEM... so we BELIEVE. While we have EVERYTHING torn down we might as well replace the clutch etc... We checked the flywheel for cracks and all is well, no need to turn it. All that is left to do is order parts and get it all back together. THANKS FOR WATCHING and STAY TUNED FOR MORE CLUTCH REPLACEMENT! Remember to LIKE & SUBSCRIBE!
