Part 1: • Now Abandoned: Southern Pacific's Tennesse... Last year my friend Michael Leckie, a long time railfan and volunteer at the Old Colony & Newport Railway, passed away. Before his passing a mutual friend suggested that I work with him on posting some of his old footage he originally shot on VHS. Without a way to convert old tapes I had not gotten around to doing so before he passed but to my surprise Mike actually had footage on CD’s. Following his passing his family brought his CDs to the railroad to see if anybody wanted them. Seeing the value in preserving Mike’s footage and the history he recorded I picked up the CD’s and am now working on slowly getting them out to the public for all to enjoy. We’ll start by taking a look at Southern Pacific’s Tennessee Pass in 1996 around the same time Union Pacific was taking over the SP. Following the merger UP closed the pass in 1997 making the scenes shot here a thing of the past. Since then most of the pass has been “abandoned” (or out of service rather) other then for a freight segment and a tourist railroad through the Royal Gorge. Mike shot almost an hour of footage just of Southern Pacific on this trip so I will be posting this in two parts. This is part two with some pretty neat footage in the Royal Gorge. I am not familiar with all the locations seen here so if anybody is willing to ID the places where this was shot, please come forward. Thanks in advance! Facebook: / mslrailmedia Comments? Questions?
