Natural light descends from the central dome, creating a solemn and restrained sense of ritual. Architecture, light, and belief are tightly interwoven, turning movement through the space into an inward spiritual journey. As the sacred site enshrining the Buddha’s parietal bone relic, the palace speaks a contemporary architectural language while echoing the essence of Buddhist tradition. The Grand Bao’en Temple site stands within the city as a witness to history. Once a vast imperial temple of the Ming dynasty, it no longer seeks to reconstruct past grandeur. Instead, it presents archaeological remains and historical narratives, preserving the traces of time itself. In contrast to the downward experience of Niushou Mountain, the Grand Bao’en Temple invites reflection on memory, allowing faith, empire, and urban life to converge within a single historical space.
