Sudden Valley is a residential community located on the western banks of the largest Lake in the county. At 10 miles long, Lake Whatcom, which gets its name from the Lummi Native word for “loud water,” is also the main source of drinking water for the city of Bellingham. Sudden Valley is 86 miles north of Seattle, WA, 70 miles southeast of Vancouver, BC, and 8 miles west of Bellingham on Lakeway Dr. and Lake Whatcom Boulevard. The village would have provided access to trails further up the South Fork Valley and was likely an important fishing and camping site. Settlements near the lake began in the late 1850s as land patents were issued at an increased rate until a peak in 1891. The community association that is today Sudden Valley began when a resident sold 1,200 acres of property called “The Ranch” to Sudden Valley Inc. in 1968. Today, Sudden Valley is the second largest homeowner association in western Washington with 7,000+ residents; the area is zoned as a rural community surrounded by rural and commercial forestry. Originally designed as a gated community, over time, the gates were removed. However, locals still reference the 7 neighborhood entrances as gates, with gates 1 and 2 providing access to the golf course, marina, and most other amenities. And gates 3, 5, 9, 13, and 28 lead up into the forested hillside along Lake Whatcom Blvd. and Lake Louise Rd. Lake Whatcom is a popular area for motor boating, fishing, swimming, and other recreational activities; there are eleven neighborhood parks, miles of hiking and biking trails along the lake, and nearby in the Lookout Mountain Preserve, Stimpson Nature Preserve, and Galbraith Mountain. Renowned course architect Ted Robinson designed the 18-hole Sudden Valley Golf Course; nearby, there are beaches, pools, dog parks, tennis courts, a basketball court, and a recreation center with a full gym. Sudden Valley is in the Bellingham School district; children will attend school at Geneva Elementary, approximately 5 miles away from Sudden Valley, then Kulshan Middle School and Bellingham High School.
