Zzzz is one of those wonderfully strange 8‑bit adventures that could only have appeared in the mid‑1980s. Released in 1986 for the ZX Spectrum 48K and published by Mastertronic at the classic budget price of £1.99, it was created by Clive Wilson and Les Hogarth, with additional work from John Smyth. Like so many Mastertronic titles, it aimed high, spent low, and somehow produced something unforgettable. The game drops you into the dream‑world of Zzzzz, a place where everyday objects behave oddly, logic takes the night off, and the mysterious Sandman may or may not help you depending on his mood. It’s a text‑and‑icon driven adventure where you navigate your subconscious using keyboard commands, cursor keys, or a Kempston joystick. I first bought this as a 7-8 year old kid and had absolutely no idea what I was doing. My dad tried helping… and neither of us got anywhere. Decades later, armed with a ZX Spectrum + and a bit more patience, I’ve finally gone back and completed the entire adventure step‑by‑step. This video walks through the full solution, celebrates the odd charm of Mastertronic’s dream‑logic design, and finally puts this long‑unsolved childhood mystery to bed — appropriately enough.
