Dr. Amy Guttman, an emergency physician and former fire/EMS medical director, shares how growing up in a Detroit-area fire department led her to become an EMT in 1987, then progress through firefighter/EMT instruction, PA school, medical school, and fellowships in prehospital care and ED ICU. She discusses why EMT/paramedic experience is the best preparation for med or PA school, and why clinicians should understand the realities of ambulance care. Now a locum physician working critical access rural hospitals, she also teaches nationwide, previously led Bermuda’s EMS, and runs Tough Love MD focused on personal responsibility. Guttman explains leadership principles drawn from resuscitations—controlling your own “first pulse,” earning authority through competence, asking the team for input, and balancing confidence with humility—plus advice to keep learning, maintain life outside EMS, and hug family daily.
