Faculty: @RaviAluganti Dr A PJ Abdul Kalam is fondly known as the People’s President, he served as the 11th president of India from 2002 to 2007. His focus had always been on transforming India into a developed nation. He was born on 15th October 1931 in Rameshwarm. His early schooling was at Rameshwaram, he was considered a bright, hardworking student and with a strong desire to learn. For college studies he went to Tiruchirappalli, where he graduated in physics and later he joined Madras Institute of Technology MIT to study aerospace engineering. After graduating from MIT in 1960 he worked in various prestigious institutions such as DRDO, ISRO and headed significant projects. Kalam served as the Chief Scientific Adviser to the Prime Minister and Secretary of the Defence Research and Development Organisation from July 1992 to December 1999. After serving as the President of India, Kalam returned back to civilian life travelling across the country lecturing and giving talks to students. On 27th July 2015, he collapsed and died while giving a lecture at the Indian Institute of Management Shillong. Kalam wrote several books including his autobiography ‘Wings of Fire’, ‘My Journey’, ‘Ignited Minds’. Abdul Kalam received the Padma Bhushan(1981), Padma Vibhushan(1990) and the highest civilian award Bharat Ratna(1997).
