Hypothyroidism is when the thyroid gland produces less or does not produce enough hormones that are required for certain metabolic activities these metabolic activities upto the biochemical or the cellular level is affected in this condition. The correlation to Hypothyroidism is called in Ayurveda as “galaganda” or “ Apache” wherein the kapha dosha along with pitta dosha is affected. In these conditions patients present with obesity, dry skin, irritability, susceptibility to infections, other immune related conditions, hoarseness of voice. In some females even the menstrual cycle is being affected. So the main area of address will be to improve their metabolic activities. That is called as Agni Vardhana chikitsa the basic metabolic activities has to be taken care of. Treatment is to start with the deepana paachana procedures. So start with drugs like trikattu, followed by the shodhana therapy. Shoshanna therapy which includes panchkarma treatments like vaamanam and nasyam. Vaamanam procedure is done after the snehapaanam of not only their metabolic activities but also activates the thyroid glands followed by certain other medication which keeps the patient fit and regulates all the hormonal procedures which has to be conducted whichever is necessary for the body. Drugs which work on the body for thyroid therapy is the kaanchanaara. Kaanchanaara is in the form of kaanchanaara gulgulu, punarnava gulgulu and certain kashaayams like varanadhi kashaayam, gulgula tikta kashaayam is all incorporated to improve their metabolic activities as well as to see that all the thyroid functions are normalized.
