When Day Is Done (DeSylva, Katscher) - Played By Harry Pollock's Club Maurice Diamonds Vocal chorus by Arthur Hall Recorded by Gennett Records, New York, 1 October, 1926 This Issue: English Beltona Record No.1148 (Labelled as "Sunny South Dance Orchestra") Matrix: X-299 (Originally issued Gennett 3401) Yet another interesting version of the hit tune "When Day Is Done", taken at a fairly rapid clip with a semi-spoken vocal. Despite its perfect condition, this disc has a somewhat semi muffled bass-heavy sound within a dark cloud of surface noise! Harry Pollock was a violinist and bandleader who made a number of records in the second half of the 1920s. Of those I have heard, they definitley have a good territorial jazz and syncopation feel. "Club Maurice" (Or "Chez Maurice") was a dance and entertainment venue in Montreal, Canada where Harry's band was resident for some time. The fact there was no prohibition there certainly helped! Recorded and processed from an original vintage 78 record by myself with the generous support and cooperation of "Mechsounds".
