Day 145. 7 unburdened kms Knowing full well it would put me at Leptis Magna in the heat of the day I enjoyed coffee and a nice lie-in in my air conditioned luxury room. Because the hotel convenient to the ruins hadn’t accepted women, I had a 3.5 km trip to make which I didn’t fancy walking so with my spiral coil I set off for the UNESCO-listed site, hoping they’d let me bring my bike inside the the gates. I needn’t have worried; I was directed to leave Gibbo in the ticket office. With no English speaking guide on site I set off with only Wikipedia to inform me. Lonely Planet - for whatever reason - doesn’t currently have an online Libya edition. Leptis Magna is one of the most spectacular and well-preserved Roman cities in the world. Once a thriving imperial city, it is famed for its vast forum, monumental arch, grand theatre, and sprawling marketplace. Without the crowds of Pompeii or Rome, it is a singular and haunting experience to wander the empty streets and imagine the grandeur of Roman Africa. Today it remains largely untouched by modern tourism; there’s not even much litter blowing about. Today I could take all the time I needed so it was the heat that finally drew me out around 2pm. Sadly the onsite museum containing recovered mosaics remains closed. Back to the hotel for an air-conditioned siesta, a power cut for a few hours was a good reminder to keep all electrics charged. In the evening I took my dinner down to the beach - as the sun set, kids played barefoot football, and rode bikes and quad bikes on the waterfront. Thank you and welcome to Daniel - my newest Patron!
