Dadiani Street (Velyaminov Street) — until the mid-XVIII century, a fortress wall of Kala Fortress ran along the modern Dadiani Street. The wall extended from Shah-Takhti on the Sololaki Ridge to the Kodjori Gate, which stood at the place where Dadiani Street meets Freedom Square. Later, in the 1820s, the wall was finally dismantled. In the XIX century, the street was called Velyaminovskaya in honor of General Velyaminov, a close associate of General Ermolov. In soviet times it was named after the Bolshevik Dumbadze. Supposedly he was one of the organizers of the attack on June 19, 1920, on Rustaveli Avenue, during which Fatali Khan Khoisky, the Prime Minister of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic, was eliminated. A bomb was thrown into his phaeton. In the XX century, it was renamed after Shalva Dadiani — Georgian actor, writer, playwright, public figure, and translator. Building No. 4 on your left side is built in neoclassical style and has original wooden stairs, as well as a wonderful secondhand bookstore - don't forget to pop by when you're near. Building No. 12 on your left side is also a neoclassical one, and it attracts attention with a decorative wrought iron staircase. Building No 14 - that was a house that belonged to Yedigarov brothers and built in neoclassical style. It is interesting that a bust of a young Roman is installed in place of the stairwell lamp. Vartanov's House - building No. 18 on Dadiani Street, at the corner with Lermontov Street. This house, built in the 1880s-90s, belonged to the first guild merchant, Belgar Fomich Vartanov. It served as both a residential and income-generating property. The upper floors housed the merchant family, while the lower floors were rented out. The entrance features exquisite paintings and beautiful stucco work. At first glance, and even at the second glance, it seems to be made of wood. But it’s actually plaster! The craftsmanship of the painting is so skillful that only upon closer inspection of the chips or by touch can one realize that the entrance is not wooden! The paintings depict four Greek Goddesses - Horai, and it is easy to guess that they represent the seasons. Special attention should be given to the door. House No. 28 on Asatiani Street is the former boarding school for noble girls - a brick building in a strict pseudo-Gothic style. The architecture is striking and catches the eye immediately. The building was constructed in 1905 by order and funded by the industrialist and winemaker Ananov (Ovanian), with architect A.G. Ozerov. Later, the boarding school became a girls' gymnasium. Currently, this building houses a secondary school and a gymnasium. The house at L. Asatiani 17 was built for himself by the philanthropist and patron of the Nerseyan Seminary, David Kherodinyan. Later, the house was purchased from Kherodinyan by the 2nd guild merchant Nazar Bejanovich Oganov. After that, the house was partially remodeled, and an additional wing was added. The author of the new appearance was the renowned architect Albert Salzman. The house itself sits on a medieval tower of Tbilisi wall. From the very beginning, this house became a refuge for public and political figures. "From 1890 to 1902, the family of Nikoghos Matinyants, who was from Alexandropol, lived here," writes the well-known Tbilisi local historian Sarkis Darbinyan in his book. "He engaged in propaganda activities, organized and called Armenians to the national liberation struggle, as well as facilitated the shipment of arms to Western Armenia."
