Here's an hour long mix of 100% Icelandic funky tracks, breaks and weird, rare things from my extensive collection of records which I've been amassing from basement bins and charity shops in Reykjavík since my teen years growing up there. There's so much more I would have liked to add to it but I tried to keep it within an hour in length and I decided to not have too many tracks from the same artists appearing over and over again. I've also not included some of the more obvious artists like jazz-fusion group "Mezzoforte" and the disco collective "Þú og ég" which are great but generally more known around these parts. So much great Icelandic stuff from the 60's and 70's is totally unknown to people, even to the locals. It wasn't until the early/mid 80's with the exploding punk scene, eventually leading to the Sugarcubes and Björk that Icelandic music really entered the consciousness of the outside world. Naturally, with a population of only around 200.000 people in 1970, and a society based mostly on agriculture and fisheries, the remote island's music scene was small and quite undeveloped during that time. The country's first professional recording studio, "Hljóðriti" opened in 1975. Before that, artists were limited to recording abroad (often in London, Copenhagen or Munich), at the national radio station "RÚV" or in little makeshift spaces around Reykjavík with limited equipment. Another effect of the small size of the population is that a lot of records were generally not pressed in large quantities - selling 500 copies of a record was considered quite successful! This makes for a lot of pretty rare records - at least in the global context! I made this mix years ago, but for some reason hadn't gotten around to releasing it. I thought that now with people bored at home, it could help with brightening your mood, so I'm just putting it out and letting you enjoy it. -Hermigervill
