We visited one of North Carolina’s eastern-most ranges in the Sauratown Mountains. These “mountains away from the mountains” are located south of the Blue Ridge but provide a home to Hanging Rock State Park, an outdoor wonderland just 30 miles north of Winston-Salem. Consistently listed among North Carolina’s top state parks, Hanging Rock includes sheer cliffs, quiet forests, water features, and rocky peaks with awesome views of the Piedmont plateau. It is here we experienced the park’s two most popular and scenic trails. The Moore’s Knob Trail, a.k.a. Moore’s Wall Loop, is a moderate trail that takes hikers to Moore’s Knob, the highest point in the Sauratown Mountains at over 2,500 feet in elevation. The trail partially follows the state’s famed Mountains-to-Sea Trail and culminates at an old fire tower.
