Grandfather Peaks via Profile Trail | Grandfather Mountain, North Carolina | Calloway & MacRae Peak

In the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina lies the iconic and notoriously rugged Grandfather Mountain, home to a state park and a non-profit attraction. The Grandfather Trail follows a 2.4 mile ridgeline between the attraction and its highest point, Calloway Peak. Access this way, however, requires a $20 entrance fee. Alternatively, you can use the Profile Trail for a steep ascent up the mountain and access to Calloway Peak. Our hike, however, will be even more aggressive as we use the Profile Trail to reach Grandfather Trail and traverse all three tallest peaks, Attic Window, MacRae Peak, and eventually Calloway Peak. We’ll throw in a search for remains of a plane crash for good measure. This may be the most difficult and technical hike in the eastern United States. Along Grandfather Trail, you should be prepared for a slow and deliberate trek as you use ladders, cables, and all-fours to traverse the rugged and sometimes unstable terrain. Throw in unpredictable weather that includes mountaintop winds that can reach up to 200 miles per hour, and you have an adventure in the making.
