In an extraordinary display of courage, compassion, and endurance, LTC (Dr) Chua Jia Long of the Singapore Navy is taking on the 115km Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming – one of the world’s toughest challenges – to raise $1.5 million in support of St Luke’s Hospital’s 30th Anniversary and the patients we serve every day. This September, Dr Chua will swim the Catalina Channel, around Manhattan Island, and the English Channel, becoming the first Singaporean to attempt this record-breaking feat in the shortest time. The Triple Crown Swim is Dr Chua’s second major fundraising effort for St Luke’s Hospital. In 2023, he made history as the first Singaporean to complete the 8 Bridges Hudson River Swim, an open-water swim race in New York that requires participants to swim 120 miles (192km), raising $250,000 for the hospital. “During my time here, I witnessed how the multidisciplinary care team cared deeply for each patient — not just attending to their medical needs but supporting them as a whole person. That experience left a profound impact on me. This swim is my way of giving back to the hospital and the patients whose resilience continues to inspire me,” said Dr Chua, who served as a medical officer at St Luke’s Hospital in 2020.
