A government proposal to introduce a time-based “kill switch” to disrupt prolonged video calls used in digital arrest scams has run into opposition from major platforms including Telegram, Meta and Google. The proposal was discussed by a committee constituted under the Ministry of Home Affairs and placed before the Supreme Court as part of ongoing proceedings on digital arrest frauds. In its status report, the Centre has recorded objections from tech companies, which argue that blanket time-based call disruptions could harm legitimate users and may not effectively deter criminals. In the report, the government has also flagged non-compliance by platforms — including WhatsApp and Zoho’s Arattai — with SIM binding and session control directions issued in November 2025. The Department of Telecommunications has meanwhile highlighted structural gaps and SIM misuse as key enablers of such scams. Vrinda Tulsian explains what the Centre has told the Supreme Court, why platforms are resisting certain measures, and what this means for India’s digital communication ecosystem. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Exclusive content, special privileges & more – Subscribe to ThePrint for Special benefits: https://theprint.in/subscribe/ --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Connect with ThePrint » Subscribe to ThePrint: https://theprint.in/subscribe/ » Subscribe to our YouTube Channel: https://bit.ly/3nCMpht » Like us on Facebook: / theprintindia » Tweet us on Twitter: / theprintindia » Follow us on Instagram: / theprintindia » Find us on LinkedIn : / theprint » Subscribe to ThePrint on Telegram: https://t.me/ThePrintIndia » Find us on Spotify: https://spoti.fi/2NMVlnB » Find us on Apple Podcasts: https://apple.co/3pEOta8
