Jason’s Judgement - 33:44 Genre: Jazz, Blues Style: Bebop, Post-bop Warne Marsh (1927-1987) was an American tenor saxophonist and jazz musician from Los Angeles, California. Known for his distinctive, purely lyrical form of improvisation, Warne’s career started on Hoagy Carmichael’s TV show in the mid 1940s, before serving in the US army for a few years. It was after his stint in the armed forces that he came under the tutelage of pioneering jazz pianist and composer Lennie Tristano, whose ensembles he would play with from 1949-1952. After his time with Tristano, Marsh would go on to play with musicians as diverse as Lee Konitz, Buddy Rich, Sal Mosca, Art Pepper, Chet Baker and countless others. This particular album was recorded across two days in early June of 1987, and was the last studio album to come out during his lifetime. On it is Marsh on tenor, Ron Escheté on guitar, Sherman Ferguson on drums, and Jim Hughart on bass. Despite being recorded so close to the end of his life, Marsh’s playing sounds as lively as ever, and his backing ensemble is top notch too, occasionally even eclipsing Marsh’s solos in their own! Definitely a must listen for any fan of 1940s and 1950s jazz. Check it out! As always, please email me at liveandalive85@gmail.com if you would like a video removed! I'm happy to oblige all requests.
