This is his first band, formed after he returned to Nigeria from his time playing and studying in London. The music here is quite different from the Afrobeat he became known for, instead showcasing a nice mix of West African highlife, Caribbean calypso, and the slightest touch of jazz-a style which Kuti described as “rakish”. This is one of only 4 recordings that this band made, and this single is the only one that got released while the band was active. Also unlike Fela’s later work, these songs are sung in Yoruba. While maybe not what more mainstream fans of Fela are looking for, I think that this single is a great window into the formation of one of the 20th centuries greatest artists. Check it out!
