How did John Sutter get these French Charleville muskets? These were the model of firearm popularly used during the American Revolution and used by Napoleon's Army when France invaded Russia in 1812, but was defeated. Russian troops picked up the guns off the battlefields and the guns were shipped to the Russian Fort's in the Pacific Northwest, one being Fort Ross. Sutter bought Fort Ross in 1841, which included 70 Charleville muskets with the purchase. Sutter's Fort State Historic Park is a California State Park located in the heart of Sacramento, California.
