Ava Concannon is a Junior Kinesiology major in the Randall Research Scholars Program (RRSP). Their research project presentation, "Comparing Cardiovascular and Metabolic Profiles of Morning and Evening Chronotypes," was completed under the advisement of Dr. Hayley MacDonald from the Kinesiology Department. Project Description: Middle-aged and older individuals who identify as evening chronotypes have been shown to have poorer cardiovascular and metabolic health outcomes, but research is lacking on the impact of chronotype among younger populations. This project seeks to better understand the relationship between chronotype and cardiovascular and metabolic health among individuals ages 18 to 45, using 24-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring, arterial stiffness measurements, body composition measurements, and blood sample analysis. The proposed research will contribute to our gaps in knowledge as to whether the same relationship, e.g., the association of evening chronotype and poorer cardiometabolic health, extends to younger (college-aged) adults. If so, this newly gained knowledge may assist in the earlier identification of cardiovascular and metabolic health dysfunction and intervention strategies, which in turn, may mitigate long-term health risks associated with the evening chronotype.
