Evaluation of Mitochondrial Variation in Different Breast Cancer C... | Mary Couture | RRS Live 2024

Mary Couture is a Sophomore Mathematics, Microbiology major in the Randall Research Scholars Program (RRSP). Their research project presentation, "Evaluation of Mitochondrial Variation in Different Breast Cancer Cell Lines," was completed under the advisement of Dr. Yuping Bao from the Chemical and Biological Engineering Department. Project Description: Cancer cells preferentially undergo aerobic glycolysis, thus utilizing their mitochondria less for energy than healthy cells of the same tissue type. In addition, the mitochondria of cancer cells exhibit decreased membrane functionality. This project aims to characterize the changes in the form and function of mitochondria from different breast cancer cell lines in comparison to healthy cells. This will illustrate the effect of the metastatic behavior of cancer on the mitochondria to inform areas of future treatment.
