Gabrielle Kowkabany is a Junior Chemical Engineering major in the Randall Research Scholars Program (RRSP). Their research project presentation, "Structural Effects of Various Flavonoids on Ligand-Iron Complex Nanoparticle Formation and Their Applications in Drug Resistant Cancer," was completed under the advisement of Dr. Yuping Bao from the Chemical and Biological Engineering Department. Project Description: Natural flavonoids have recently been intensely studied due to their antioxidant and anticancer properties. However, their pharmacological applications are limited by their low aqueous solubility and poor overall stability. Previously, our group was able to reproducibly form quercetin-iron complex nanoparticles using multiple ratios of quercetin-to-iron at room temperature. This ligand-metal complex increased both the solubility and stability of quercetin, without altering its original properties. In this study, we systematically investigated the structural effects, using luteolin and naringenin on ligand-iron complex nanoparticle formation, and an antioxidant assay was used to study and to compare the flavonoid properties in nanoparticel form. In the future, these flavonoid-iron complex nanoparticles will be applied to a drug-resistant breast cancer cell line model to determine their ability to prevent or to reverse drug resistance.
