I gave Mabel a break this weekend and took Liz out with me for the first time since she smacked her leg into a fence stump a couple of weeks before Christmas. She is a very patient, steady dog around the nets and always gets herself in the right place to cover bolts but I don't work her as often as I would like to as she has a tendency to smash into things or split herself open so I'm becoming very selective and a little cautious about where I use her. The first plot we visited had some small warrens that had signs of fresh activity in a couple of areas, but one slightly larger warren caught the dogs attention and she gave a very solid, stubborn mark. One bolt and another dug from this patch and then we quickly ran the ferrets through a couple of other smaller & less promising warrens on the way back to the truck on the off chance we dropped lucky. Onto the second plot of land & we netted up a good looking warren on a long hedge & entered my young jill & hob (who, if all goes to plan will be mated in spring / summer 2020 to give me my next generation of workers) Nothing home on this one so we lifted the nets and had a quick walk around the land to check the other warrens & bumped into a couple of guys who also work the land for the farmer. It turns out they had a fairly decent day the weekend before and they had worked through the warren we netted up earlier in the day bolting to their hawk. We still have a few areas to work before we hang the nets up for another season, but with the weather being so mild still & most does we have caught now being milky or carrying young I feel the season is almost up.
