All in all a very unproductive day out. The weather wasn't great, overcast with a stiff breeze and persistent drizzle but we tried to make the best of it. The plan for the day was to stop net along the field side of a long hedge, cutting it off through the middle with stop nets where possible and purse netting the other side which backed onto a gravel roadway and a large open field. It is extremely rare to get bolts in the open on this sort of land but with Mabel working over the ferrets, the 8 acre field would give her plenty of opportunity to stop any escapees. Once this hedge was netted, we covered a shorter hedge and a large mound in the corner of the same field. These spots have always been quite productive in the past and on the relatively newly worked ground there were plenty of signs of fresh scrapes and the holes were all looking used too. The first ferrets out of the box were my polecat jill & sandy hob kits from this year, I am desperately trying to get them behind some bunnies to get their experience up as this duo are likely to be mated with one another after next season to provide my next generation of workers. The small hedge proved to be fruitless so we moved onto the mound where a solitary rabbit bolted. We lifted the nets and worked the long hedge in sections from end to end without a single bolt which was both surprising and slightly infuriating. Before we left, we identified a couple of areas on the same plot of land that seemed to have heavier traffic so check out my next few videos to see how we get on!
