Accompanied by Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf, Annan visited families and observed vaccination work at the Thuri Park tent camp that houses 2,000 people in quake-hit Muzaffarabad. The leaders were accompanied by their wives, Nane Annan and Sehba Musharraf, as they visited families sheltering in tents inside the quake zone. Annan said he would renew funding appeals at Saturday's donor conference for what he called "one of the largest humanitarian tragedies we've had to deal with." Annan said he hoped conference delegates would "give willingly and generously." The October 8 magnitude-7.6 quake left more than 87,000 dead, mostly in Pakistani Kashmir. About 3 million people lost their homes, leaving hundreds of thousands living in flimsy tents and an unknown number with no shelter at all. Annan said he was impressed with the rare cooperation in relief work between aid agencies and militaries, primarily Pakistan's. Britain announced on Friday it would pledge an additional 120 million (m) US dollars at the conference for post-earthquake reconstruction, to be paid out over three years. Britain has already contributed 57 million (m) US dollars for disaster relief, the British Embassy said in a statement. Musharraf has appealed for more than 5 billion (b) US dollars in reconstruction and relief aid.
