Aziz was received at New Delhi airport by India's Foreign Affairs (External Affairs) Minister, Natwar Singh. The two later held talks which Navtej Sarna, India's external affairs ministry spokesman, described as "a very friendly, positive and forward-looking." Indian officials have said little about Aziz's two-day visit, which he is making as part of a regional tour as the outgoing chairman of the seven-nation South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation, or SAARC, trying to keep down expectations for any dramatic breakthroughs. On Wednesday, Aziz will meet with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh. The two are expected to discuss Kashmir, the disputed Himalayan region at the root of decades of Indo-Pakistani distrust. The goodwill gained since January as both sides has seen eased visa restrictions, resumed diplomatic contacts, and relaunched air and rail links. Attacks by Pakistan-based Islamic militants in Indian-controlled Kashmir, are at the heart of festering tensions between the two sides. India's Prime Minister and Pakistani President General Pervez Musharraf are likely to meet in the Bangladeshi capital during the SAARC summit in January.
