Their 1st Record SOLD 22 Million…But After They TANKED cuz Their Band Name SUCKED!—Professor of Rock

Remember when a particular band came out of nowhere and dominated radio and MTV with a big album and a bunch of hit songs, and it looked like the start of a massive career? But then the band sputtered and never had another hit, and a few years later, you might hear their old hit and go "What the hell happened to that band?" Well today we have a special edition of bottled lightning, counting down those intriguing stories. Including frontman Darius Rucker, who was overheard singing in a college dorm shower. His future bandmate proposed they team up on the spot… Then years later, David Letterman boosted their album sales into the millions when he promoted it on his show. Then there was Fine Young Cannibals, who put an ad on MTV for a new lead singer. They got 500 cassettes in the mail, and they all sucked. But a friend took pity on them and recommended Roland Gift, a saxophone player who secretly had a great voice. They had 3 Huge hits and a #1 album and became the #1 band of the last year of the 80s. And then they NEVER put out another song ever again. Let’s do this. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Executive Producer Brandon Fugal Honorary Producers 22Unchained, Thomas Halterman, Keith Novak, Yvonne Fus, Jeffrey Thorn ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Subscribe to the Professor of Rock Podcast Apple: https://apple.co/445fVov Spotify: https://spoti.fi/42JpfvU Amazon: https://amzn.to/44b5D6m iHeartRadio: https://bit.ly/444h8MO ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Patreon: http://bit.ly/ProfessorofRockVIPFan Merch Store: https://professor-of-rock-merch.creat... Radio had their songs on repeat. Their albums went multi-platinum. But then it was one and done… or not much more than that. It’s 9 bands that hit it big and then fell off the map in an instant At our #9 spot, we’ve got those crazy Spin Doctors. There were plenty of jam-band, blues-rockers in New York during the early 90s, but the Spin Doctors stood out from the pack. Even if only for an album. Frontman Chris Barron's journey started with a literal leap of faith. At age 20, he moved to NYC with just a hundred bucks and an acoustic guitar to join Blues Traveler's John Popper in a band called Trucking Company. But Popper left to focus on his own thing, so Barron and guitarist Eric Schenkman renamed themselves Spin Doctors, eventually adding drummer Aaron Comess and bassist Mark White to the lineup by 1989. The band recorded their debut, Pocket Full of Kryptonite in 1991 in tiny New York studios, then hit the road. Hard. Epic Records initially did little to promote them, so the band forced their own breakthrough by playing hundreds of gigs over the next year. Finally, in 1992, Epic released "Little Miss Can't Be Wrong" as a single. The song hit #17 on the Hot 100 and spent multiple weeks at #2 on the Mainstream Rock chart. Barron later admitted the seemingly upbeat track was actually written about his abusive stepmother, the woman who told him “you're going to die in a gutter.” It was an underdog anthem born from real turmoil. And then came "Two Princes,” which Mike wrote when he was still a teenager. It came from his fascination with Lord of the Rings, and initially, when he recorded it, the tempo was very fast, but it wasn’t working, so he slowed it down and changed the lyrics, and it became a smash. to hit #7 on the Hot 100 and #2 on rock radio, and was the sound of its time; MTV and radio couldn't get enough of these songs. The Spin Doctors became an overnight sensation… after a year of grinding. Pocket Full of Kryptonite shot to #3 on the Billboard 200 and went on to sell 10 million plus copies worldwide. But then, just like that, they were gone. Their second album, Turn It Upside Down, struggled straight out of the gate with a weak lead single, "Cleopatra's Cat,” stopping cold at #84 on the Hot 100. The next single, “You Let Your Heart Go Too Fast” did decent on rock radio but after that, the band fell off a cliff. Key members started leaving. And their next couple of albums disappeared into the ether. Then disaster struck. In 1999, Chris Barron suffered vocal paralysis. His voice just failed, and he was given a 50/50 chance of talking or singing ever again. But thank God, Barron’s voice did come back in 2000. But the silent breakdown put Spin Doctors on pause for years, ending the era of their greatest exposure. Since 2005, they have released three more studio albums, the most recent coming in 2025. But nothing has come close to the 90s rock radio magic of
