Unique Performance, based in North Texas, collaborated with Carroll Shelby with the plan to create an authentic line of continuation Shelby Mustangs, including the famous GT500E "Eleanor" and the high-performance GT350SR. These vehicles were built from "rescued" 1965–1968 donor chassis that were stripped to bare metal and modernized with 750-horsepower Super Snake engines, advanced suspension, and high-performance braking systems. Each car was officially recognized by the Shelby American Automobile Club (SAAC) and received Shelby VIN, which offered a unique blend of 1960s aesthetic charm and 21st-century supercar reliability. The company emphasized a "best of both worlds" philosophy: on the track they were designed to outperform contemporary Ferraris and Porsches, while still maintaining street drivability. For enthusiasts who could not obtain one of the limited production units (by 2004 they had made 475 GT500E and 500 for the GT350), Unique Performance provided a complete line of bolt-on performance products. The idea was that owners could transform stock Mustangs into "corner carvers” by prioritizing upgrades to modern handling and stopping power over raw engine performance. The high-performance dream ended abruptly in 2007 when police raided the North Texas facilities, uncovering a massive "title washing" and VIN tampering scheme. Unique Performance collapsed into bankruptcy amid federal investigations and lawsuits, as it was revealed that millions in customer deposits had vanished while many cars remained unfinished or poorly built. Carroll Shelby severed all ties, and the company’s assets were seized to settle debts. This left a legacy defined more by fraud than by the "Eleanor" Mustangs they pioneered. Despite the dozens of felony charges filed against him, president and CEO, Douglas Hasty never went to prison. While the Farmers Branch Police Department submitted 25 felony counts of VIN tampering to the Dallas County District Attorney’s office in 2008, the criminal case effectively stalled. Federal prosecutors declined to take up the case, leaving it to local authorities who were already dealing with the company's massive Chapter 7 bankruptcy.
