The empathy gap: a cognitive bias that makes it difficult for people to empathize with others if they do not share the same cultural, genetic, or ideological traits. Not only does the empathy gap influence our interactions with friends and family, it also holds implications for how we treat marginalized groups. Fareeha challenges us to stop viewing empathy as an automatic reflex and start viewing empathy as a skill to be mastered. In doing so, she hopes to provide an answer for how we can overcome a societal lack of empathy towards stigmatized and vulnerable populations. Fareeha Quayyum is a third year student majoring in biology. In her talk, she discusses the empathy gap: a cognitive bias that makes it difficult for people to empathize with others if they do not share the same cultural, genetic, or ideological traits. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at https://www.ted.com/tedx
