Dirty Dutch Mantell is considered one of the greatest minds in wrestling history, as he was involved in all aspects of the business, on all levels. He went from being a rookie in the early 70s, to being one of the top names in Memphis, wrestling all over the country, to eventually transitioning to a backstage role as a booker and a producer in some of the biggest promotions in America (WWE, CWA, SMW and TNA). Plus he became a manager as well. After serving in the army, even getting a medal for his service in Vietnam, Dutch turned to pro wrestling. He started his career in Georgia and, considering this was during the time of the Atlanta war, he moved to Ann Gunkel's All South. There is when he met Tom Renesto, who was one of the best minds in wrestling at the time. He credits Tom for mentoring and teaching him so early on. Eventually he left Georgia and started going through Florida, Alabama and Tennessee for the first time. His name is based on the original Dutch Mantel who was one of the most feared shooters of his time and a man who was extremely influential both as a wrestler and a trainer. He was one of the men behind what Texas wrestling would become. He also trained Roy Welch, the godfather of Southern wrestling. Those are some big shoes to fill for such a young rookie. Did he live up to that? Well he isn't the one who has to have an adjective added next to his name in order to differentiate them from each other.. so you decide. Dutch went on to become one of the most reliable and well-rounded workers of his time. Always solid in the ring, with great intensity, believability and a look not seen in too many wrestlers since. Add on top of that great mic skills, and you got yourself the kind of wrestler every promoter would want on their roster. He is definitely best known for his runs in Memphis where he achieved his biggest success. He was one of their top stars and won their top title(s) several times. His wars with Jerry Lawler are still exciting to watch. Just that segment with those two on TV is incredible. You know the one, Dutch calls Jerry out live on TV, a "this town isn't big enough for both of us" promo, they have a match and after realizing that Jerry's in fact a better wrestler, Dutch asks for a truce. And just when Lawler dropped his guard down, Dutch attacked him. That's classic wrestling right there. Please go watch that if you haven't yet (search "Dirtiest Player in the Game"). Mantell's biggest contribution to wrestling is definitely his helping of other wrestlers. He was instrumental in shaping many future greats: from working with a young Mark Callaway (Undertaker) in Memphis and Texas both as a partner and a rival, to managing JBL in the mid-90s, working with a young Kane and Steve Austin as well, and later on managing Cesaro and Jack Swagger in 2013/14. He wasn't successful just in America, but also Puerto Rico. Having wrestled there in the 80s, Dutch returned after his unsuccessful runs in WCW and WWF, and became probably the greatest booker in WWC's history. After leaving WWC and returning to the states, Dutch became a member of the creative team in TNA where he stayed for several years. He eventually came back to WWE to manage Cesaro and Jack Swagger's team and later in 2015 returned briefly as Del Rio's manager as well. And he now has a successful wrestling channel on Youtube.
