Herman "Germany" Schaefer (February 4, 1876 - May 16, 1919) was primarily an infielder in Major League Baseball. He spent the majority of his career with the Detroit Tigers and the Washington Senators, but also played for the Chicago Cubs, Newark Peppers, New York Yankees, and the Cleveland Indians. Schaefer made his Major League Debut with the Chicago Cubs on October 5, 1901, and played his last game for the Cleveland Indians on April 25, 1918. Schaefer stole first base August 4, 1911. In a game against the Chicago White Sox, he stole 2nd base in an attempt to advance teammate Clyde Milan from 3rd base score the winning run. It didn't work. On the next pitch, Schaefer successfully ran back to 1st base. White Sox manager Hugh Duffy came out to argue with umpire Tommy Connolly. Schaefer broke for 2nd base again and got caught in the rundown while Milan ran to home plate and was tagged out to end the inning. A rule was put into place shortly after Schaefer passed away that ruled a player out if he attempted to run bases in a reverse order after legally possessing another base. Schaefer passed away on May 16, 1919, in Saranac Lake, New York from pulmonary tuberculosis. He is buried in Section T at Saint Boniface Catholic Cemetery in Chicago, Illinois. #detroittigers
