In this episode, I’m sitting down with Linus to share his career journey—a story filled with lessons on the importance of passion, mentorship, and the choices that define our paths. As he told me his story, I couldn’t help but reflect on how moments of decision can shape not only our careers but also who we are as leaders. Linus was working hard in his role, earning about 30,000 shillings, when a life-changing opportunity came his way. A new company approached him with an offer he described as “irresistible”—a 70,000-shilling salary and the keys to a brand-new Peugeot 405 SR. They even handed him the car keys and asked him to take it for a spin before his final interview. As Linus test-drove the car, he said the offer felt like a dream come true. When we sat down for this interview, I asked Linus what went through his mind at the time. He shared that despite the allure of the money and the car, he felt a strong need to reflect before signing anything. He decided to speak to his managing director—a man he greatly respected—for advice. Linus candidly told him he was leaving, citing frustrations with his manager as the primary reason. What struck me most about Linus’ story was what happened next. His MD didn’t make grand promises. Instead, he calmly told Linus two things that would change everything: his manager was being promoted and would soon leave, and a new marketing director had already been hired to replace him. Then, with wisdom and conviction, he said, “You have a bright future here. If you stay and keep doing what you’re doing, I promise you will achieve far more than what you’re being offered.” I could see the emotion on Linus’ face as he recalled that conversation. He admitted it wasn’t easy to turn down the 70,000-shilling offer, but he trusted his MD’s words. In the end, he chose to stay, not because of an immediate raise—he didn’t get one—but because he believed in the company’s vision and the support he received. Staying turned out to be the right decision, as Linus went on to achieve incredible growth in his career, far beyond what the initial offer could have provided. As I listened to Linus, I was reminded of the responsibility leaders have to create environments where employees feel valued and empowered. Linus’ story shows us that people don’t stay because of money alone—they stay because of purpose, mentorship, and a belief in their future. This interview was a powerful reminder for me, and I hope it inspires you too. Join the conversation on our social platforms and share your thoughts.
