A superb afternoons session spent at Nottingham on the Midland Mainline where we see plenty of services from East Midlands Railway, Cross Country, Northern and freight from GBRF and DB Cargo UK. This wasn't the original station that first served the town of Nottingham. The first station was Carrington Street Station and was opened in 1839 when the Midland Counties Railway opened their line from Nottingham to Derby, the old station sites on the sight where the Magistrates Court now resides. The current station wasn't opened until 1848 when the Midlands Counties Railway merged with two other companies to create the Midland Railway. As a result of the various companies coming together and the resulting increase in traffic it meant that the old station was no longer fit for purpose, so a new station had to be built at the current sight to accommodate the growing levels in traffic. There was an accident at the station in 1896 when a loco was running light engine through the station tender first and collided with a stationary freight train. The freight train in question had six empty fish wagons in its consist, during the collision one of the wagons was thrown off the rails and collided with an cast iron support for the station roof which subsequently caused a 94 ft section of the roof to collapse onto the platforms and some of the track. In the early 1900's the station was redesigned and made larger to accommodate many more trains and passengers. With the re-design having been completed in 1904, the various work to the station was billed at roughly £1 Million which in todays money would be around £108.2 Million. During the time that the station was under the control of the London, Midland and Scottish Railway (LMS) the station was the target of an IRA bombing, along with several other stations including, Leicester, Derby, Birmingham, Stoke, Coventry, Leamington Spa and Stafford. It was discovered that a bomb had been left in a suitcase on the station was detonated at 6:30am, the glass roof of the cloakroom and the inquiry office were blown away in the explosion. In 2004 the NET (Nottingham Express Transit) opened its line with the terminus being Nottingham station for quite some time. The bridge that the trams currently run on was part of the old Great Central Mainline, a lot of the tram route runs on the same surface. The station went through several remodeling phases throughout the remainder of the 21st century until it got to its current format we all know today. In 2018 there was a huge fire that tore through a large section of the station was required the attention of over 10 fire engines and 60 firefighters to try and tackle the blaze. The fire was later established to been caused by a 34 year old woman who had set fire to a bin whilst trying to use Heroin and Crack. After the fire had been dealt with East Midlands Trains renamed one of their HST power cars (43467) to 'Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service and British Transport Police Nottingham' My next station will be Carlisle on the West Coast Mainline.
