Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is one of the most well-researched conditions in mental health, yet clinicians are often left navigating questions about which therapies are evidence-based and how to apply them in practice. In this video, I review a 2023 network meta-analysis examining the comparative effectiveness of psychotherapies for adult PTSD, including EMDR, Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET), and other trauma-focused approaches. I discuss what this type of research can help us understand — and what it does not address when it comes to real-world clinical decision-making. The findings highlight that several trauma-focused therapies, including EMDR, consistently fall within the top tier of effective treatments for PTSD. This supports informed client choice while also reinforcing the importance of modality-specific clinical skills once EMDR is selected as the treatment approach. When EMDR is chosen, research does not guide clinicians on how to select or sequence targets — that work relies on thoughtful treatment planning, clinical judgment, and EMDR-specific decision-making.
