Its mid October here in Zone 5 and, except for the rutabaga and chard, its just about time to put the garden to bed for the winter. The dead plants are pulled out and composted, and the perennial weeds dug out in order to save time in the spring. We then add pelleted limestone, a natural soil conditioner that provides calcium and magnesium. The pellets are easy to spread and have plenty of time for to break down. We have a lot of trees and fallen leaves. We use the mixture of end-of-the-season grass clippings and chopped leaves, collected with my mower's bagging attachment. This is spread over the gardens like a blanket for the winter and will be turned over in the spring adding lots of organic material to the soil This is the squash and pumpkin garden...all cleaned and limed and now ready for the leave and grass mixture to be added. The main garden is now finished,,,all except for the rutabaga harvest, and leftover chard, cabbage and broccoli plants that we give to the chickens.
