#alexandrmarkov #horses #palaeogenetics #science #sciencenews An analysis of 475 ancient equine genomes has clarified the history of horse domestication. The key conclusion reached three years ago, based on 273 genomes, has been confirmed: horses suitable for use as transport were bred around 2200 BC in the Caspian Steppe. Over the next few centuries, they spread across Eurasia along with the newly invented chariots, quickly displacing local wild horse populations. The large-scale westward migration of steppe people, associated with the spread of Indo-European languages in Europe, occurred at least 6–8 centuries before the steppe people learned to ride horses and harness them to carts. New data has shown that the domestication of horses was accompanied by a population bottleneck, followed by a population boom.
