Learners practised describing symptoms, understanding common medical questions, and responding naturally in real-life situations. This lesson is essential for daily life, GP appointments, pharmacies, hospitals, and emergencies. Common Illnesses • cold • flu • fever • headache • stomach ache • back pain • toothache • sore throat • cough • allergy Examples: • I have a cold. • She has the flu. • I have a fever. Talking About Symptoms Common verbs: • have • feel Examples: • I have a headache. • I feel sick. • I feel dizzy. • I feel tired all the time. Ache vs Pain vs Sore (Very Important) ✅ Ache Used for common, long-lasting pain, often with body parts. • headache • toothache • stomach ache • backache Examples: • I have a headache. • He has a stomach ache. ✅ Pain Used for strong or serious pain, often with in. • pain in my back • pain in my leg Examples: • I have pain in my back. • She feels pain in her knee. ✅ Sore Used when something is tender, irritated, or hurts when touched or used. • sore throat • sore eyes • sore muscles Examples: • I have a sore throat. • My muscles are sore. Describing How Long • for two days • for a week • since Monday Examples: • I’ve had this pain for three days. • I’ve felt sick since yesterday. At the Doctor – Common Questions • What’s the problem? • How do you feel? • How long have you had this? • Do you have any allergies? • Are you taking any medication? Patient Answers • I have a sore throat. • I have pain in my chest. • I’ve had this problem for two days. • I’m allergic to penicillin. Doctor’s Advice • You should rest. • You need to drink water. • Take this medicine twice a day. • You should stay at home. Emergency Phrases • I need to see a doctor. • It’s an emergency. • I feel very unwell. Complete Doctor–Patient Dialogue (Real Life) Doctor: What’s the problem? Patient: I have a sore throat and a headache. Doctor: How long have you had this? Patient: For three days. Doctor: Do you have a fever? Patient: Yes, a little. Doctor: You should rest and take this medicine twice a day.
