Aerial shot of damage to buildings STORYLINE A gas tank explosion flattened a bakery in a southern German village on Friday, killing at least three people and prompting a search for others feared buried under the rubble. The explosion, which destroyed the bakery in the village of Lehrberg, near Nuremberg, set fire to a nearby warehouse and damaged several adjoining houses. Sixteen people were injured, including members of the baker's family who lived in the building, passers-by and emergency workers. Two people were in critical condition, officials said. The body of one man was pulled from the rubble shortly after the morning blast, and two more bodies were removed during the afternoon, fire official Walter Schwab said. At least three other people were reported missing. The explosion occurred after emergency workers had arrived at the scene in response to complaints from residents that gas was leaking from the tank in the yard behind the bakery. The gas ignited as firefighters were spraying the tank, which belonged to a nearby restaurant, with water in an attempt to reduce the risk. Several hundred emergency workers, including soldiers from a nearby US military base, as well as heavy lifting equipment and sniffer dogs were rushed to the scene to help in the search. Aerial television pictures showed a yawning gap where the bakery stood, strewn with charred debris. Firefighters sprayed water to cool another gas tank in the area.
