Veils of the Nile – Basket and Cane 2022 Arabic, Persian and Central Asian Showcase https://www.veilsofthenile.com/ The last performance in our show tonight features a troupe started in North Bend over 20 years ago by Aleili, a dancer originally from California, who became a major force in the dance community as a teacher and the director of Veils of the Nile. Although Aleili moved to Hawaii some years ago, she was scheduled to appear in this show in 2020, but of course, that never happened because of the pandemic. We were hoping she would be able to participate this year with her troupe, but it did not work out. The first dance was created by Aleili after her trip to Egypt in 1988, where she was inspired by the women she saw washing clothes on the banks of the Nile. This would be called a folkloric dance as it depicts what people do in their daily lives. The second number takes us to Upper Egypt for a popular folk dance called Raqs Asaya or the stick dance, that was inspired by the men practicing their skill in combat with a bamboo staff, which shepherds have used for centuries to ward off predators. The female version uses a cane instead of a staff, and the character is bouncy and playful. The basic movements are still the same, as the dancer twirls the cane and hits an imaginary opponent when she strikes the floor.
