Step inside the world of early bone china production and discover the real industrial process behind Britain’s most famous ceramic. At Shirley’s Bone & Flint Mill in Stoke-on-Trent, cow bones and flint pebbles were calcined, crushed, ground and washed to create the raw materials that fed the entire pottery industry. In this on-site interview at the Etruria Industrial Museum, Bernard Lovett, representing generations of workers at the Mill and the Shirley’s Volunteers CIO, explains how bone and flint were handled, fired, and prepared for use in early recipes for fine china. Alongside his account, this film follows the full process from sourcing raw bone and flint, to calcining, to the steam-powered grind pans, and finally to the slop and powder delivered to potteries across The Potteries. Featuring: Rare footage of the mill in steam Grind pans turning under power Engineers demonstrating James Watt’s “parallel motion” beam engine Drone views beside the Trent & Mersey Canal This is the true industrial story behind the whiteness and strength of bone china.
