Diabetes Prevention Within Neighbourhoods and Local Communities: Impact on Long Term Conditions

The annual UEL diabetes conference is the centrepiece of community engagement and outreach in Newham and nearby boroughs. Since 2018, it has brought together researchers, academics, NHS and Public Health professionals, charities, voluntary groups, service users, students, and the wider public under one roof. Cutting-edge research and information on diabetes and long-term conditions are shared through presentations, posters, and stalls. Its ethos is that prevention is better than cure, with self-empowerment fostered through knowledge exchange and collaboration. Spin-offs include GP-based workshops, a diabetes café in Stratford Library, a CPD course for NHS staff, and valuable opportunities for student volunteers and employability upon graduation.
