What is going on everybody? Welcome back to The Rat’s Nest! This is chrom3rat, and today we are diving into something that is definitely going to require a sturdy stomach and maybe a splash of holy water. We are checking out Exsanguinate, a lo-fi horror experience from Michael Cosio (Old Games) that feels like a cursed PS1 demo found in the back of an abandoned hospital. 🕵️ The Black Ridge Disappearances We step into the boots of Private Investigator Matthew Barker in October 1987. We're heading into the Black Ridge Mountains to meet our partner, Daniel, and investigate the McCarthy Manor—a place linked to a string of gruesome disappearances and rumors of occult rituals. The game wastes no time setting the mood with off-kilter camera angles, a grainy retro aesthetic, and a soundscape that had my skin crawling before I even reached the front door. 🩸 "Damn, Daniel" The investigation took a dark turn almost immediately. After finding the front doors jammed, we slipped into the cellar only to find Daniel dead, looking like he had his tongue ripped out. The "locked in a basement simulator" began in earnest as we scavenged for keys and solved Resident Evil-style puzzles involving zodiac statues and gear cranks. Things went from "spooky" to "nightmare fuel" when a reanimated, zombie-like Daniel started stalking us through the crawlspaces. Pro tip: his hit radius is massive, and getting stuck under the stairs is a one-way ticket to a reload. 📖 The McCarthy Grimoire The environmental storytelling here is top-notch. Through a series of journals from "DM," we’ve learned about an expedition to Syria that unearthed a Mesopotamian grimoire and a statue of a cephalopod-headed deity known as "The Keeper." It seems the manor's owner was using these dark arts to try and save his wife, Edith, from a terminal brain tumor—a classic setup for things going horribly, bloodily wrong.
