If you bought a new Samsung Galaxy device you may notice that its built-in SMS app is not longer pre-installed. ~~~~~ Hi! Today, I wanted to highlight a move from Samsung that will likely leave many left wondering what is going on. #android #galaxys25 #galaxys25ultra #galaxys24 #galaxys24ultra If you have ever owned a Samsung Galaxy smartphone then you know the company is notorious for duplicating many apps that Google already pre-installs. This includes Samsung Internet, even though Chrome is already there The Galaxy Store, even though Google Play is preloaded And many phones from 2021 and onward will have Samsung Messages installed while Google Messages is there as well. However, newer Samsung Galaxy devices will no longer ship with Samsung Messages pre-installed out of the box. So I know there are going to be people wondering where the app went, why it's no longer pre-installed, and how you can manually install it yourself. Where is Samsung Messages? If you bought the new Galaxy S25 then you may have noticed the Samsung Messages application isn't going to be anywhere in the homescreen or the app drawer like you may be expecting. This is normal, and you aren't experiencing any type of bug or glitch. And this is because Samsung has decided to stop pre-installing the app on its latest devices The company is opting to migrate its users over to Google Messages as they are in the process of sunsetting Samsung Messages. Samsung appreciates the work Google has put into developing RCS and the number of features it offers the community. With encryption being a major feature of RCS So instead of Samsung investing in the work required to get RCS working independently of what Google has available, they have decided to just stop pre-installing the application on its phones. The company isn't making it so that Samsung Messages cannot be used. They would still like people to use it IF they are happy with its features But that could change in the future as they begin reducing the amount of resources they allocate to the project. How to Install Samsung Messages If you're happy with Samsung Messages and would rather use it than Google Messages, that's still possible. Even on devices that will not ship with the application pre-installed on it. However, Samsung Message is no longer available on the Google Play Store Instead, you will need to open up the Galaxy App Store and then search for it from there. Samsung doesn't seem to be cutting off support for the application, nor do they seem to be forcing people to move away from it. They have even pushed out a new app update that adds the ability to edit messages that have already been sent while also including an option to auto-delete OTP (one time password) codes that have been sent via SMS. These app updates will be delivered via the Galaxy App Store as well, so you'll need to go there in order to update Samsung Messages going forward. You can even find the Default Apps section within the Settings app, and change over from Google Messages to Samsung messages as your default sms texting app of choice. conclusion I understand why Samsung would rather not spend the money or employee resources to work through its transition to RCS It makes little sense to do so when Google has already been working on a solution for over 10 years now. And honestly, I admire Samsung refusing to close down the application and force people off it. Samsung will likely see its customers using Galaxy Messages less and less as time goes on Then, in a few years when there are only a few hundred people still using the application, it may be time to fully shut down it down Summary ~~~~~ 1.
